Convento das Mercês is an old building located in the historic center of São Luís do Maranhão. It was placed under the invocation of Nossa Senhora da Assunção, although the people did not call it that way, it started to be built in 1654, when the mercedaries João Cerveira (Maranhão from Alcântara) and Marcos Natividade, coming from Belém, arrived in São Luís. they joined the brothers Manoel de Assunção and Antônio Nolasco, as well as the layman João das Mercês. It was raised there in mud covered with straw. In the following year, on additional land, the facilities were rebuilt in stone and lime, building the chancel.
With the Independence of Brazil (September 7, 1822), a process of emptying the property began which resulted in its abandonment. Only in the middle of the 19th century will the street undergo interventions, and its space will be used to host the Minor Seminary. On May 5, 1905, the building was sold to the Maranhão State Government, which tried to make new interventions in the original architecture, including inverting the fronts of the convent and the attached church (which faced the sea) and checked the single facade unit.
The interventions were the responsibility of Lieutenant Colonel Zenóbio da Costa. The reason was simple, the site would house the headquarters of the Military Police and the State Fire Department, which remained there until the end of the 1980s, when the battalions were transferred to the current headquarters.
With the departure of the militias, the property underwent further renovations (1987-1990), during the Coffee Government. The main entrance faces Rua Jacinto Maia, protected by palm trees. Before, its main facade facing the river. The annexes that removed the work were removed, the original arches and the well were discovered. In this restoration, the foundations of the demolished church were found. Today, with 5,800 m² of built area, the Convento das Mercês has a rich museological and bibliographic collection, and was considered one of the Seven Treasures of São Luís.
Built in 1654 and listed as a National Historic Landmark, the convent was inaugurated by Father Antônio Vieira, and the Convent of the Order of Mercedaries functioned there. It belonged to the state of Maranhão from 1905 to 1990, when the then governor João Alberto de Souza donated the building to the José Sarney Foundation, his political ally. In June 2009, the Justice decreed the return of the historic building to the state heritage and, in October of the same year, the Foundation was closed after allegations of embezzlement.
