The National Library, founded by José Miguel Carrera, is, together with the National Institute and a small number of institutions, one of the first institutions created by the nascent Republic of Chile.
In the newsletter El Araucano, a Proclamation of the National Library Foundation was published on August 19, 1813. Thus, to establish a large public library, all citizens were called upon to deliver books for their formation. Like other republican institutions, it was closed when the so-called Rancagua disaster occurred, where national troops were defeated by the royalist army.
With Chacabuco's victory, it reopened and, supported by the government, began to receive important collections. The then supreme director of Chile, Bernardo O'Higgins, appointed professor Manuel de Salas as the institution's first director. In 1822, Fray Camilo Henríquez (director of Aurora Chile) was appointed as second librarian.
From its inception, the library was dependent on the Royal University of San Felipe and its successor, the University of Chile until 1852, when it acquired great autonomy.
In 1913, 100 years after the Library, the Santa Clara Monastery is located, located in Alameda de las Delicias, next to the present hill of Santa Lucía. On August 24 of that year, the cornerstone of the new building was laid.
When the Directorate of Libraries, Archives, and Museums was established in 1929, the library became a dependency of that organization.
Av. Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins 651, Santiago.
The Library has extensive and valuable collections of books and manuscripts. Several of them were purchased or donated by their owners, making up a valuable historical treasure.
National monument.
