Built in the third century BC, the ancient theater of Taormina is an ancient Greek theater, located in the city of Taormina.
The ancient Roman theater was built mostly of bricks and probably dates back to the Roman Empire, although the structure looks more like the Greek theaters. During empire times, fights between gladiators and fierce animals on the spot were common. In a renovation made in the second century, the theater was 120 meters in diameter, the second largest of its kind on the whole island of Sicily
