The Solar da Marquesa de Santos, located in the city of São Paulo, was acquired in 1834 by Domitília de Castro and Canto Melo, the Marquesa de Santos, which made it one of the most aristocratic residences of São Paulo.
The Manor was acquired for the amount of eleven thousand and four hundred thousand reis, from the daughter of Brigadier Joaquim José Pinto de Moraes Leme, who died at that time. In addition to "Solar da Marquesa" the building is also known as "Palacete do Carmo".
Due to its architectural features, it can be assumed that this building is a remnant representative of the last half of the eighteenth century and is today regarded as the last example of eighteenth-century urban residential architecture.
Solar has, however, undergone several changes of use and several renovations, receiving additions and successive modifications. By the mid-nineteenth century, it is presumed to have its current neoclassical features, and by the 1930s and 1940s its annex was built in stages.
From 1975 onwards, it housed the activities of the Municipal Secretariat of Culture, was banned in 1984 for security reasons and only in 1991 the Solar underwent a restoration process that allowed the building to be open again to the public.
