Traveling to Barrancas del Cobre in the Sierra Tarahumara is an unparalleled experience of meeting the force of nature at its best. It is one of the longest and deepest canyon systems in the world, with 60,000 km of mountains, almost half of which correspond to the surface of the cliffs.
In this impressive journey, we highlight the meeting with Barranca de Urique, the deepest of the State and Mexico, with 1,879 meters and the best known of the Sierra, because it originates from the junction of the Copper and Tararecua Gorges. You can be admired with all your majesty from Divisadero Station or Areponapuchi Station if you travel by train.
From the studies of its geological constitution, it is known that the ravines are mainly formed by volcanic rocks between 20 and 30 million years, since the tertiary era, when an intense volcanism elevated the Sierra Sierra Madre Occidental.
Over a period of nearly 100 million years, large amounts of lava and millions of tons of ash have accumulated which, when deposited, formed the great mountain plateaus.
The Divisadero has several four-star hotels, often filled with tourists of all latitudes, attracted by the stunning beauty of the place and willing to visit other views, such as Mesa de Mogótabo and Güerachi, or down the ravine to bathe in clean hot springs, establish contact with the Rarámuri communities and acquire their curious handicrafts.
In the view, there are no scheduling restrictions. That way, if you're a photography fan, you can wait for the best hours to get great impressions of the beautiful landscape. The descent to the ravines usually lasts two days, and if you like camping, it is an unbeatable opportunity for fun.
It is possible to reach by road from Chihuahua in about five hours. In addition, the site has a runway for light aircraft and the capital takes 50 minutes of flight. The most traditional way to reach this beautiful place is via the Chihuahua-Pacific Railroad.
A good option to see some of the region's attractions in a few days is to take a ride or rent a car from Chihuahua to the Sierra to see interesting cities like San Andrés, Cuauhtémoc - where you can buy the most delicious cheeses made by the Mennonites, Carichi, Bocoyna. and San Juanito, with strange rock formations and where you will receive him at home in beautiful cabins located in the middle of the forest, those of Norítari-, heading towards San Ignacio de Arareco, to enjoy a lakeside walk that bears that name. and finally spend the night in Creel at the traditional Parador de la Montaña hotel to take the Don Chepe route from there.
In addition, for those who enjoy adventure tourism, there is the Urique River, which can be traveled on rafts accompanied by a specialist in this sport. In addition there is horse rental. Undoubtedly, distraction options abound.
