One of the most modern and largest palaces that surround the main square of the great Qosqo was the property of Wayna Qhapaq. That palace called Amarukancha was granted to Hernando Pizarro after the Spanish invasion.

Years later the property was bought from the heirs of the conqueror by Diego de Silva and his wife Teresa Orgoñez, who donated it to the Jesuits some time after their arrival in this city in 1571; so they can build a church. The founder of the ´´Society of Jesus´´ or the Order of Jesuits was Saint Ignatius of Loyola.

Plaza de Armas of Cusco.

The church was mainly made with andesite and has the most beautiful facade among the churches in the city. At the main entrance is the Immaculate Virgin Conception carved in berenguela (marble), very close to it there are two external chapels that lean on the main church; to the north is the Chapel of the Virgin of Loreto (since 1894 it is known as the Chapel of the Virgin of Lourdes) that today still serves for worship and where the Lord of Burgos is almost always worshiped (which was brought from the demolition of the church of San Agustín). To the south is the chapel of San Ignacio de Loyola that was awarded to the Qosqo Society of Artisans. Inside the church there is a wide nave; At its end the Alto Altar, which was carved in cedar wood in a hybrid style by Diego Martínez de Oviedo, was also completely gilded with gold flakes by Cristóbal Clemente in 1670. This altar is 21 meters (69 feet) high and 12 mts. (39 feet) wide, in its central part is the effigy of the Immaculate Virgin Conception and above it there is a canvas that represents the Transfiguration of the Lord; above him there is a statue of the same Order of some unidentified personage. The main nave also has a path that connects the two side chapels, there are six altarpieces with the diver's style and a completely gilded pulpit.

On both sides of the High Altar there are 4 other cedar wood altars, three of them very rich.

After restoration work in 1986, a very interesting subsoil was discovered under the High Altar.
