Arequipa is one of the most important cities in Peru because of its cultural remains and the history that each of its corners tell. One of the most visited tourist attractions in this department is the Colca Canyon, located in the Colca Valley. The natural site is also known as "Valley of Fire" and "The Kingdom of the Condor", among many other names given to it. The impressive landscape and mysticism surrounding the valley make the canyon an important tourist resort.



Colca Canyon is located in the far northeast of the Arequipa Region, Caylloma Province, 165 km from Arequipa and 40 km from Chivay, the principal city and capital of Caylloma Province. The highest point in the valley is the inactive Ampato volcano (6,288 meters above sea level) and the lowest is the confluence of the Colca and Andamayo rivers (970 meters above sea level).



The Colca Valley is 100 km long and occupies only one sector of the Colca River basin, between the Callalli and Huambo districts. The route to Colca crosses the slopes of Chachani and crosses plains full of ichu and yareta, samples of the Andean vegetation. In these places there are also alpacas and vizcachas, beautiful camelids typical of the region.



The canyon is over 100 km long and deepening begins several kilometers after Chivay, reaching the deepest point at 3,400 meters. The best observation spot is at 3,800 m.a.s.l. The Colca area is ideal for adventure tourism. You can see the flight of majestic Condor on Colca. The Condor has always been cataloged by the Incas as a representation of spirits; therefore, when we see them, it is like seeing the lost spirit of the Incas, it is a sacred bird because it flies to the sky, surpassing the highest point of the Andes. About 7000 feet tall, it looks like she goes to the gods.
