The Center for Popular Culture, also known as "Casa da Festa" is an unmissable space for those who wish to get to know Maranhão's cultural events more closely. With a guided tour, the space houses utensils, images, paintings, clothing, ornaments and everything else related to Bumba Meu Boi, Tambor de Crioula, Tambor de Mina and Festa do Divino. On the first floor, Catarina and Pai Francisco are presented, characters from the enchanted history of Bumba - meu - Boi. Gradually, observing the objects contained, we come into contact with this magical universe of Maranhão culture, glimpsing the culture originating from the African matrix of the Gêgi and Nagô peoples, for example, in the Tambor de Mina, the original name of the times when the gold rush (mines). Dance is a religious expression, always led by women. We contacted the Casa de Nagô and understood the importance of the "Room of Secrets", a place where sacred objects are deposited and that only those who reside in the terreiro can enter. It is evident the religious syncretism where Christian saints merge into entities of African origin. In this way, Nossa Senhora da Conceição assumes the condition of Yemanjá, for example. Another very interesting aspect is the syncretism of São Sebastião with indigenous entities, assuming the status of Caboclos Ubirajara, Pena Brava and Chefe da Mata. In another space in the cultural center we find the Tambor de Crioula, a dance offered to São Benedito. Dance is practiced only by women, while men play the instruments. The event is considered as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Anyway ... To know this space is to immerse yourself in the culture of Maranhão expressed in its dances. We recognize very closely and with historical and legendary explanations that the mixture of peoples that gave rise to us Brazilians, that is, Portuguese, black Africans and native Indians, offer an intense and rich cultural heritage that deserves to be valued and respected, as it happens in streets of São Luis and the Domingos Vieira Filho Popular Culture Center. An essential visit for those who are in São Luis do Maranhão ...
