In the mid-1860s, some residents of Chinácota, attracted by the abundance of cinchona and the richness of the fauna, began to make excursions, originating the first rancherías.

José Antonio Bautista had made his in the place that today occupies the scale. One day, according to oral tradition, he left his ranchería, with his shotgun, a spear and a pet dog. In the course of several blocks he had killed several birds with which he was forming a sartal. Suddenly he was surrounded by a herd of váquiros and in such distress he found no other salvation than to climb a log.

Before the attack of these wild animals, the trunk threatened to fall. It was then that José Antonio Bautista went to San Antonio de Padua, offering to build him a chapel in that place if he saved him from the mishap. Suddenly, as if the váquiros had heard a signal, they fled.
