It is a wild area created in August 1966 as a National Park and reclassified as a Natural Monument in 1982.
The objective of this nature reserve is to protect the birds of the place such as penguins, cormorants, gulls. The site is home to one of the largest penguins of southern Chile, whose population has been estimated at 60 thousand pairs of Magellanic Penguins, which constitutes more than 95% of the Avifauna Biomass.
