Hamburg
The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg is a city-state (Stadtstaat) located in the north of Germany, on the banks of the River Elbe. It is the second largest in the country and the eighth in the European Union. The port is one of the largest in the world and, according to estimates, will surpass Rotterdam as the main European port. The city is also an industrial center of great importance. It lies between the states (Bundesländer) of Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony.

In addition to city-state (Stadtstaat), city with state status, Hamburg is also an independent city (Kreisfreie Stadt) or urban district (Stadtkreis), that is, it has the status of district (Kreis).
Tourism
Damaged during World War II, the city displays little of its old part. The ruins of the Nikolaikirche tower serve as a reminder of the tragic consequences of the war. Nearby, the Jakobikirche (1340) was rebuilt and displays its original style. In the inner part stands the organ of the seventeenth century, the work of Arp Schnitger. Another notable church is the Michaeliskirche - from the top of its 132m tower you have beautiful views of the city.

Hamburg's neo-renaissance town hall is on the Rathausmarkt. To the north is the Binnenalster lake. Also nearby is the famous Kunsthalle, which tells the story of European art from medieval times to the twentieth century. Of particular note is the wing dedicated to 19th century German Romantic painting.

The most famous example of the expressionist buildings of the city is the Chilehaus (1922-4) by Fritz Höger at the Kontorhausviertel.

The port of Hamburg, second largest in Europe (smaller only than Rotterdam) is worth the visit. There are two interesting museum ships anchored in the harbor: the Cap San Diego freighter and the Rickmer Rickmers sailboat (1896).
Gastronomy
The gastronomy of Hamburg is shaped by the confluence of various culinary trends in Germany, but focuses on the most hand-made products; The fish of the river Elbe, the surrounding land and the animals of these areas. Mostly, the seafood cuisine stands out here.

Main Ingredients

Fish and seafood are one of the main ingredients of Hamburg cuisine; The generosity of the Elbe River provided a wide variety of fish, such as herring or plaice. There are also many local vegetables and fruits such as onions, beans, green cabbage, etc. Among the meats, pork, which is widely used, also includes beef, although in smaller quantity.

In beer, beer is also inevitable, as are liqueurs such as wines and other fermented cereals.
Weather
Due to maritime influence, the climate is milder than in the eastern interior.

The hottest months in Hamburg are June, July and August with average temperatures of 19.9 to 22.2 ° C. Temperatures around 28 ° C are not unlikely in the summer. The climate is humid all year round.
